Chef Alonzo was absolutely charming. Though the interior could use some updating (even a candle on each table and dim the overheads would make a world of difference) the atmosphere was lovely. I ordered the perfectly cooked elk burger that was served on a savory foccacia bread nestled in with caramelized onions and thick sliced beefsteak tomatos all complimented by a Huckle berry and Marion berry compote. This was far and away the best elk burger I have ever had. The entree also included flash fried kale chips seasoned with sea salt and a balsamic reduction drizzle. And if it couldn't get more perfect, a hearty portion of their home cut pomme frits powdered with Parmesan cheese rounded off the plate. Superb! My dining companion ordered the seared sesame Ahi tuna (medium rare) that melted in her mouth. The tuna was accompanied by an orange marmalade and for contrast a strict Wasabi sauce that kept her senses dancing. This entree was rounded out by a nest of cool glass noodles and mandarin oranges sprinkled liberally with rich black sesame seeds. This too was an excellent meal. We were so satisfied by our dinners that we didn't leave room for the lavender infused creme brulee. I guess we will have to go back and start with dessert first!

This place is amazing. We came here for our 9yr anniversary and I must say they blew our minds away. The food was amazing. The chef there really knows what he is doing, but it didn't stop there. Chef Alfonzo(?) is also the bartender and he made the most amazing drinks I have had. He knows his way around food and liquor. I would highly highly recommend this place to anyone!!

This restaurant was such a pleasant surprise.. We not only had great service from James, but the food was superb! One of the best dinners I've had in a long time. I had the grilled salmon with tabbouleh rice and it was perfectly cooked and had amazing flavor. Do yourself a favor and order the kale chips too. They were THE best things I've ever tasted. Thank you Portneuf Grill for such an amazing experience!

My husband and I like to come here once a year to relax, in part for the old hotel plus we like the restaurant. The atmosphere is warm and cozy. We had breakfast and dinner this time and I can honestly say there is a drastic difference between the two. So dinner here is good as usual, the portions are big and they mirror a menu of a upscale restaurant. The bartender/chef is very friendly, prompt and also professional. The dinner service is great. For such a small town this is a nice accomplishment. This last dinner we had here seemed to lack a little finesse compared to before but I can tell they seem passionate about the food they make for dinner. Breakfast however was a different story. This morning we waited 10 min to get water and order our drinks. The waitress seemed disoriented. Then finally she gave us our tea and then coffee. I was surprised that they wouldn't accommodate my alteration to my Eggs Benedict by adding a side of sliced tomato. They did however omit the English muffin and ham as per my request. The eggs were good and my husband enjoyed his breakfast too. Despite the less than helpful and enthusiastic service from the waitress. I'm not a morning person either, I guess? It would be nice though if they had better consistency throughout the day of food service. .

Fabulous ahi poke, fresh and delicious. The oyster mushroom burger..... Oh my. Scrumptious. Juicy. Came with fries topped with truffle oil, scallions, and cheese.... Wow. Seared ahi tuna also good, not my favorite, but portion was huge. Friendly service. Very kind to my one year old.

The server James gets five stars for his sarcastic and entertaining wit. The food is surprisingly good for rural Idaho- we appreciated all of the zoo animals on the menu: elk, buffalo, duck... Haha. OK maybe not zoo animals but not your typical carnivorous fare. The only downsides were a) a yellow jacket problem preventing us from eating outside (which were forewarned about, thank goodness) and b) the richness of the food (but necessarily a bad thing but definitely good to consider when choosing portions; the truffle fries and kale chips are a good example). A pleasant surprise to find in Lava Hot Springs!!

My wife and I come to Lava pretty frequently. And have eaten at most places in town. I have to say hands down this is the best food in town. I had the oyster mushroom burger with truffle fries and my wife had the seared ahi tuna. The burger is the best I have eaten. Very high quality beef and the ciabatta bun was fantastic. My wife's tuna was a very pleasant surprise as well. Very clean and very fresh. Perfectly cooked. Amazing. Certainly worth finding this little place and having a fantastic meal.

Nice experience. The bartender was awesome. We taught her how to make kamikazes and she did a great job. The cuisine chef came to chat and charge us $15 per drink like if we were in San Francisco, so watch out. He asked me for my accent, I have lived in many places, and said that my girlfriend's is undoubtfuly "American"....excuse me! Chef! Do you know that there is no official language in the USA. Did you know that I am an US citizen too. No, assumptions reflect more than the obvious. There you go. Know where you go and where you get into when in Lava Hot Springs.

Food was very good I had duck ravioli I generally do not order duck because most chefs services it raw. The duck was well done with a smokey taste delicious. My wife had grill avacodo with almond butter and cashews in a salad with vingeratt. Very good with a interesting combination of flavours.

Hands down the best food in lava! Reasonably priced for the high quality food. Catered to vegetarian diet and meat eaters. Best fries I've ever had. Our waiter was awesome and looked like Antonio banderas. I highly recommend this place and will be back!

Had the most wonderful meal here. The food was exceptional and the service was excellent. If you are in the area this is a must place to eat. If you are vegan, gf, vegetarian, or a carnivore there are many great options for you here. Highly recommended

In the middle of nowhere, this restaurant proved a special treat. Friendly bar, awesome menu and very pleasant people. The chef works special magic at dinner and breakfast. And all is very reasonable. Don't miss it...the hotel is also a rare find.

We were visiting the area from Chicago and needed a restaurant for my father-in-laws birthday. The pickings for a nice dinner seemed slim and since one of my hobbies is eating, and eating well, I kept my expectations low. Well, this place was a pleasant surprise. When we arrived, the chef was standing by the door to welcome us. From the chef, to the wait staff, to the owner, everyone was beyond welcoming and attentive. We dined on a Monday night, so we're were basically the only people in the restaurant which made us feel even more like honored guests. As for the food, the menu had a nice selection to make our whole party happy and everyone was pleased with their meals. I ordered the seared ahi tuna and it was done perfectly. The menu didn't have anything overly creative or inventive but was good, solid food, done right.

HORRIBLE. You may add well eat wet cardboard. We made reservations at this restaurant for their Thanksgiving dinner. The food was beyond bland. The gravy was translucent and was like pouring hot water on top of our potatoes. The stuffing was just soggy croutons. They have no pride in what they put on their plate. I can't believe they charged $30 for that joke of a meal. I wouldn't have paid $5 for that crap. The homeless shelter probably serves a better Thanksgiving dinner. What an awful Thanksgiving dinner. Wins worst holiday meal of my lifetime. Yuck!

My husband and I were in Lava for our anniversary and wanted to have a nice dinner out. Needless to say, this place exceeded our expectations! The food was delish (try the grilled cheese sampler appetizer), the service was so friendly and prompt. The restaurant is a little outdated and nothing to write home about, but what do you expect in a small town like this?! We will definitely come back next time we are in Lava!

The chef and employees work very hard, the chef came out at the end of the night to see how our meal was. However, it was not fantastic. I had the sesame-crusted tuna which was interesting, not that great, and my fiance had the chicken (good, nothing too inventive). A decent meal, but nothing to write home about.

My breakfast burrito was not pleasant. It was mostly mushrooms. Half of the small menu wasn't available. Everything was very overpriced.

Good. Traditional. Good service. Food was good just nothing fancy or outside the box. Certainly the better of the two meals we had while in Lava.

We have only eaten breakfast there. It's decent, pretty good quality food. We ate a good chorizo breakfast burrito. The ambiance was a bit old fashioned and simple.
